Since the 1st November 2013 the port of Mariel in Cuba has been housing the first FREE TRADE ZONE (FTZ), that's to say a free trade port area.
FTZ is going to be 465 km square wide and it will be capable of sorting container 3 times bigger than the one in Havana.
Sorted as an idea of attract international investments and reinforce commercial relations with China, Mexico and Brazil, FTZ may represent a very important commercial turn around for Cuba, because it would allow to bypass the ship seizure, the Helmes-Burton's law becoming attractive for international which will be supporting the economy recovery for the whole country.
Despite the dreads of the last few years showed by the overseas sponsors with regards to Cuba due to contorted experiences, unclear laws and endless negotiations on each commercial segment, sponsors feel confident that this new FTZ will mark an important turn around for the Cuban economy and in the development of the account with and for abroad.
