For 100 years the Chinese giant is going to benefit from the profits of what might become the second focal point of the maritime commerce in the world, after the Suez Canal.
However this project represents a huge risk for Nicaragua because the opening of the canal might transform Nicaragua Lake into a large brackish puddle crossed every year by tens of thousands of ships, tankers and container ships.
The freshwater reserve of Nicaragua Lake ensure irrigation to cotton cultures, sugar, coffee, sectors that provide 17% of its own GDP and give jobs to 29% of the population.
Panama responds to this claim extending the Suez Canal.
In 2015, by the end of the works, the new gates of the Panama Canal are letting 30 thousand ships transit per year, against the current 14 thousand, redoubling also the number of piers.
Panama and Nicaragua are going to start a fight based on costume fees, services and maintenance costs.
